Nigel Mansell races towards a Broad Street Walk of Star honour

Formula One racing legend Nigel Mansell will be on Broad Street on Sunday August 14th to receive a Walk of Star honour.

To celebrate Nigel being inducted onto the Walk of Stars Broad Street will be holding a spectacular motoring event.

Join in from 12noon on Sunday August 14th for a summer’s afternoon celebrating the best of motoring from the Midlands hosted by BBC WM’s Paul Franks. Alongside live music and some great food offers, the street will have displays of both modern and vintage motoring greats and interactive driving activities. Whilst not wishing to belittle Nigel Mansell’s achievements, in terms of your statement “Nigel remains the most successful British Formula One driver of all time”, I’m afraid that success in F1 more normally is measured by the number of F1 World Championships won. The list below more realistically represents who was the best F1 driver:
Jackie Stewart (3), Jim Clark (2), Graham Hill (2), Mike Hawthorn (1), John Surtees (1), James Hunt (1), Nigel Mansell (1), Damon Hill (1), Lewis Hamilton (1), Jenson Button (1).
It’s also worth remembering that safety was far better in Mansell’s day than in Clark’s or Stewart’s times. Out of only 99 race starts, Stewart won an amazing 27 races and was on the podium an amazing 43 times often in cars that were less than well funded and definitely not considered favourites to win. Mansell by contrast started 187 races and won only 31 of them despite being in what by experts were considered the top teams of the era.

Great news! Nigel is one of the great racers in motor sport. He never used to relax with his current position with the race, always pressing on to win. His battles with other greats of the time such as Prost, Senna and Piquet are epics to remember.
